Sacramental Preparation
Sacramental preparation
is part of the ministry of religious education and formation
for members of the parish. Sacraments are celebrated in accord
with Canon Law and diocesan policies. It is understood that
all who request the reception and celebration of Sacraments
are to be registered and active members of the parish. Mt.
Carmel parish holds preparation sessions and activities for
all the Sacraments.
Baptism
Parents who wish to have their baby
baptized are to be active participating members of the parish
and are required to attend a parent preparation session. This
meeting includes an overview of the history and theology of
Baptism, an explanation of the Rite itself, and suggestions
for creating a Catholic environment at home. A team of parents
assists with the preparation session and the celebration of
the Sacrament. The parent preparation class is held quarterly
in September, November, February, and May. Baptism is
celebrated on the third Sunday of the month during the weekend
liturgy or after the 11:30am Mass. Contact the Parish
Office for more information.
First
Reconciliation and First Eucharist
Traditionally
children are prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and
Eucharist during the second grade. Parents are required to
participate in the Parent Preparation program and to continue
this preparation at home with their child. The preparation
program for parents is in accord with diocesan policy and
consists of five (5) meetings between October and February.
Students are prepared in their religious education classes
throughout the year. In addition to their classes, a retreat
day is held for the students as well. First Reconciliation is
celebrated in January with students and families from the
other parishes in Ashtabula. First Eucharist is usually
celebrated in May. Parents within the group are asked to
volunteer to assist with various duties and the retreat
day.
Confirmation
Those
who are in the Eighth Grade from all three Ashtabula Catholic
parishes are prepared for the celebration of the Sacrament
of Confirmation together. Candidates from Saints John &
Paul School and from the Tri-Parish Religious Education programs
meet once a month on Sunday evenings during the school year.
Confirmation is usually celebrated in March and rotates among
the Catholic parishes. Adult team leaders from each parish
assist the candidates in their preparation for the Sacrament.
Marriage
A
comprehensive program has been established for those preparing
for Christian marriage. It includes several meetings with the
pastor, and sessions with a sponsor couple to help assist the
engaged couple to prepare for their life together in marriage.
To celebrate the sacrament of marriage, the parish priest must
be notified at least six (6) months in advance (in accordance
with diocesan policy). It is presumed that those desiring
marriage in the Church are registered active members of the
parish.
Anointing
of the Sick
Twice a year the three
Ashtabula Catholic parishes hold a Rite of Anointing of the
Sick at one of the parishes for anyone who wishes to receive
this sacrament of the sick. Ministers of Care are present to
give hospitality, presence and support to those who attend.
The Sacrament of the Anointing is also available upon request
to those in need and is usually administered in the hospital
when being visited by the priest. Anyone who is anticipating a
hospital stay, surgery, or becomes ill should be anointed
whenever
possible.
